One thing that is interesting about the Kings’ hot start to the year is that their recipe for success has been different from past years. Even in a down season, Los Angeles has always been a possession-driving force but this year, despite being above 50 percent CF for the year, they rank 14th in the NHL in 5-on-5 situations. With a new coach, it isn’t odd that the Kings are doing things differently, but to see them have this much success without their usual possession dominance is a bit strange.

Last night’s action: The overtime misery continued on Saturday with both Pittsburgh (+126) and Buffalo (+175) falling after the third period. That makes it nine losses in a row on games that have gone to overtime here. Pretty crazy, but you just hope that there’s a good bounce (or nine) waiting around the corner. We earned a split in the matinees as the Rangers took care of the Oilers, 3-2, but the Avalanche – who were thoroughly outplayed – blew a third period lead and fell to Ottawa. Thanks to wins by Minnesota and the Islanders, we ended up on the plus side for the night.

Tonight’s slate:

The only game that is of interest is the tilt between Calgary and St. Louis. The Flames and Blues are pretty much on par with each other in Corsi and expected goals differential, but the Flames are getting Travis Hamonic back to solidify an already impressive blueline, and with Calgary playing at home there’s enough of an edge here to have a go with the Flames.
