The Vikings and Lions are set up for a winner-take-all Week 18 matchup for the No. 1 seed and NFC North crown. By contrast, the 49ers have already been eliminated from the playoffs, and haven’t beaten anyone besides the Bears in the last six weeks.
That’s a pretty wide gap in motivation. If anything, the 49ers would be better served by losing their remaining games to improve their draft standing.
Plus, the Lions match up extremely well here. San Francisco has a tough pass defense (fifth by DVOA) but struggles against the run (24th) — and the Lions love to play through their run game.
On the other side of the ball, Detroit’s defense is banged up — especially its defensive line — but the 49ers are missing at least two, — probably three — of their top offensive tackles. That will make it hard for the 49ers to attack downfield if they fall behind.
Put that together, and we have a perfect storm for the Lions to turn this into a blowout. They should be able to run the ball at will while San Francisco struggles to keep pace behind a piecemeal offensive line.
If and when the Lions get a lead, this one should be over.

With the state of the Lions defense in shambles due to injuries, there is no reason to expect them to stop playing in shootouts any time soon.
Over the past month, Detroit has allowed 8.7 yards per pass attempt — the most in the league. Each of its last three games have gone over the total with 51 total points or more scored.
The 49ers should come out with a pass-heavy game plan once again. Last week, Kyle Shanahan called the highest rate of passes for any Niners game this season.
With the injuries to the running back position, Brock Purdy has been asked to shoulder the load. When a team is calling passes at a near 70% rate, which is what I expect from the 49ers on Monday night, you’ll get some explosive plays with plenty of incompletions mixed in that stop the clock. Both of these outcomes are positive if you are backing the over.
The 49ers defense ranks 28th in success rate defending the run this season. Without the ability to make the Lions offense one-dimensional, they have very little chance to slow down Detroit’s offensive machine.
To make matters worse for the 49ers, Charvarius Ward is set to miss this game. San Francisco had strong metrics defending perimeter receivers, but slot receivers have consistently been a thorn in its side. The Niners rank 29th in defending inside receivers on a per-completion basis.
I am comfortable playing this total up to the key number of 51. Detroit scored 31 points in Levi’s Stadium in last year’s NFC Championship Game and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them match or exceed that number once again.

George Kittle has enjoyed a career year this season and he’s in a great spot to continue stat padding on Monday.
The Lions have an above-average pass defense, but they utilize a massive pass funnel, forcing opponents to throw at the third-highest rate this season. The Lions have been above average at defending tight ends this season, but Kittle is matchup proof and should see heavy volume.
I have the true odds on Kittle to score around +125, making this a great EV bet.
