Edwards-Helaire has failed to clear this number in the Chiefs’ first three games this season, finishing last week with seven carries for zero yards — he did score a touchdown!
Edwards-Helaire’s grip on the starting job in the Kansas City backfield seems to be loosening. Jerick McKinnon ran for 20 yards on seven attempts last week and should command a fairly even share of carries with Edwards-Helaire. We also could see speedy rookie Isiah Pacheco get more involved if the Chiefs want a spark in the run game.
Either way, the Chiefs have passed at the highest rate on early downs in a neutral game script this season and are road underdogs. They’re likely to be more balanced, especially against a stingy Buccaneers run defense.
I’m projecting Edwards-Helaire for closer to 8.5 carries, but his floor is much lower this week due to his uncertain role and potential trailing game script.
