It’s official. Nick Saban will be on the sidelines tonight.

After a third-consecutive negative COVID-19 test in as many days, Saban has cleared the SEC’s false-positive protocol, canceling out the positive test result he was given on Wednesday.

Of course, the presence of the best head coach in college football alters the projected outcome of tonight’s game. And that means a change to tonight’s point spread.

Prior to any COVID-related Saban news, Alabama was listed just shy of a touchdown favorite — around -6 to -6.5 across most of the market. And his initial positive test caused Bama’s chances to take a hit, as the Tide immediately dropped to -4.

Heading into Saturday morning, though, that spread had already ticked back up to -4.5. And around 8:45 a.m. ET, just before the news of the second negative test broke, some sharp action hit Alabama, sending the spread up to -5. And even a bit after that, many shops continued the move up to -5.5.

Now, with Saban officially taking the sideline, any lagging books have joined at Alabama -5.5, with some even returning to the previous line of -6.

As of writing, 57% of bettors have taken the tide to cover that spread.
