This matchup between Rutgers and Wisconsin features a clash of styles. The Scarlet Knights are one of the fastest teams in college football (ranking seventh in seconds per play) while the Badgers, unsurprisingly, rank 81st.

Both teams enter this game with a single loss, as Rutgers fell to Michigan while Wisconsin lost to Washington State. Both teams are also coming off of convincing wins.

One theme throughout this article is that these teams may be more similar than you think.

The Scarlet Knights have had a pretty good season so far as they’ve beaten the teams they were supposed to beat. Virginia Tech, Northwestern and Temple may not be the murderer’s row of college football, but Rutgers used to be in that tier and this season, it’s separated itself as a program.

The Scarlet Knights have gotten out of that tier by designing a quick-paced running attack that blitzes opponents on the ground. Kyle Monangai is 20th in the country with 471 rushing yards, but he’s far from the only rushing threat on this team, as dual-threat quarterback Gavin Wimsatt is also a threat to take off on the ground.

Rutgers runs the ball the fifth-most in the country, but has to improve its efficiency, ranking just 62nd in Success Rate and 56th in Explosiveness.

Unsurprisingly, the Scarlet Knights don’t move the ball well through the air, ranking 81st in Passing Success Rate.

They’re going to have to hope they don’t fall behind early.

Wisconsin is sort of the opposite of Rutgers in that the Badgers run the ball very efficiently — but not as much as in the past.

The Badgers run the ball at the 57th-highest rate in the country, which actually seems a bit low with Braelon Allen in the backfield.

This could be a big problem for Rutgers, which struggles to stop the run, ranking 102nd in Success Rate Allowed.

Lost in the Allen hype this season is the fact that the Badgers also upgraded at quarterback with transfer Tanner Mordecai taking over for Graham Mertz, who left for Florida.

The Badgers have made significant improvements as a result, as they rank in the top 40 in Offensive Success Rate and Havoc Allowed, while ranking ninth in points per opportunity.

The Scarlet Knights are having a really nice season, but they struggle to stop the run, which is a massive problem against the Badgers.

Wisconsin will run over Rutgers after forcing quick stops all game long.

Bet the Badgers at -13.5 or better on the spread.
