My Wofford vs Tennessee NCAAB Betting Preview
There’s nothing like the opening Thursday and Friday of the NCAA Tournament, as there’s drama from noon all the way into the late hours of the evening.
In the Midwest Region, we have an intriguing opening 2/15 game between Tennessee and Wofford.
The Vols have dreams of making the program’s first ever Final Four, and they believe that this is the team that can do it.
For the Terriers, it’s an opportunity to embrace the underdog role and pull off a major March upset on day one.
Make no mistake, Wofford will have to play close to a perfect game just to hang around in this one. The Volunteers are that good on both ends of the floor.
Physicality and defense are always hallmarks of Rick Barnes’ teams, and this year’s group is no exception.
Tennessee ranks third nationally in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency rankings, and the athleticism it possesses makes it really hard to imagine Wofford being able to keep this to single digits.
Guys like Felix Okpara, Jordan Gainey and Zakai Zeigler all play swarming defense, which will make it extremely difficult for the Wofford playmakers when they have the ball in their hands.
Beyond that, Tennessee is an elite rebounding team, which will lead to very minimal second chance opportunities for the Terriers.
Corey Tripp and Dillon Bailey will each have to get hot from beyond the arc if Wofford has any path to an efficient offensive night.
On the other end of the floor, a Wofford defense that ranks outside the top 230 in defensive efficiency is problematic when going up against a Tennessee offense that can score the ball in a number of different ways.
The Vols have plenty of shotmakers from the outside in Chaz Lanier and Igor Milicic Jr., but even when those aren’t falling, they can just pound it in the paint against an undersized Wofford front line.
Sometimes you can see a path to an upset in these 2/15 games based off styles and different matchups, but Tennessee is just too steady across the board for Wofford to be able to poke any real holes in its armor.
The Vols have no weakness and are the bigger and more athletic basketball team.
Wofford may be able to hang around for a little bit, but eventually the talent gap will show itself in a major way.
I expect Tennessee to want to make a statement in its first game in a determined march to the Final Four, and Wofford won’t be able to do anything to stop it.
Give me the Vols to win this one by 20+, comfortably covering an 18.5-point number.
