Robert Morris vs Alabama College Basketball Betting Preview
The Alabama Crimson Tide will have a potentially tricky first-round matchup against the Robert Morris Colonials, who won 26 games and secured the Horizon League regular season and postseason titles.
I do like this Robert Morris team, as it won nine of its final 10 games using an efficient offense.
However, heading into the Big Dance and facing a top-10-ranked SEC squad differs from facing a team like Green Bay.
Robert Morris played just one high-major opponent in the non-conference slate and lost to West Virginia, 87-59. Yes, it was a road game and months ago, but these non-conference high-major matchups are a solid reference.
Let’s keep an eye on Grant Nelson’s injury status. He’s an important piece for the Tide, but regardless, they should be fine without him here.
The Crimson Tide love pushing the tempo, and they want to gun it from deep. They play at the fastest tempo in the country and shoot 3s on nearly half of their possessions. If the offense gets comfy, that could lead to a blowout, especially against a worse opponent.
Labaron Philon is a huge piece for the Crimson Tide. Last year, when Sears took over March Madness, another ball-handler like Aaron Estrada helped Sears.
Philon and Estrada have similar abilities. The freshman is more skilled, but he puts pressure on the rim — just like Estrada — which presents drive-and-kick chances.
Opponents connect on 3s at a 34% clip versus Robert Morris, which could be a real problem. The only way to beat Alabama is by holding it to a horrible 3-point shooting night, and I don’t foresee Robert Morris doing that.
Also, the Colonials are very undersized compared to Alabama. While playing smaller works well in the Horizon League, that will be tougher in this matchup. Robert Morris starts a pair of guards 6-foot-2 or shorter.
Also, Alvaro Folgueiras, who started as RMU’s biggest player, is 6-foot-9. Now contrast that to Alabama starting Clifford Omoruyi and Nelson — or Jarin Stevenson — all of whom are 6-foot-11. Folgueiras is a highly skilled player, but he hasn’t seen the size or athleticism of the Bama bigs.
Kam Woods is the best pure scorer on Robert Morris’ roster. He scored 15+ points in the season’s final six games, with four assists in each. If Woods and Folgueiras put together big games, Robert Morris will have chance to cover.
Andrew Toole’s squad will need an outlier shooting night. Two of the main driving forces that carried Robert Morris to the Big Dance were a 35% offensive rebound rate and a 38% free throw rate.
Meanwhile, Alabama’s size and length will dominate the glass on both ends. Perhaps Robert Morris finds a way to get to the free throw line, as Alabama ranks outside the top 200 in FTA/FGA, but the dominance of the SEC has influenced Alabama’s numbers.
I feel a pretty sizable blowout coming. Alabama is a 23.5-point favorite — which definitely seems high — but the Tide have the offensive pace and elite shooting to turn this game into a blowout.
