Colorado State vs Maryland March Madness Preview

There’s no team in America hotter than Colorado State right now, but I think the winning streak ends at 11 in this Round of 32 matchup against Maryland.

The Terps started their tournament campaign with a businesslike victory over Grand Canyon on Friday.

Maryland dominated the Antelopes from start to finish, and Kevin Willard’s team appears determined to make the Sweet 16.

Maryland is as balanced as just about any team in America, ranking inside the top 25 in KenPom’s efficiency rankings both offensively and defensively.

As a result, it’s hard to see the Rams being able to exploit much in this matchup.

Colorado State benefited from facing a Memphis team that was very much shorthanded, which won’t be the case on Sunday night.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie is one of the more underrated guards in America, and Rodney Rice is quite the complement to him in the backcourt as a high-level shotmaker.

Maryland doesn’t turn the ball over and does a very good job of taking it away from the opposition.

That’s concerning for a Rams offense that ranks outside the top 180 nationally in taking care of the basketball and often gets sloppy in the half court.

There’s no denying that Nique Clifford is an absolute beast and will get his in this matchup, but will that be enough to keep pace with an explosive Terrapins offense?

I don’t think so, as Maryland just has a lot more weapons and isn’t reliant on any single player to score.

Derik Queen should be able to consistently score with his back to the basket in the paint, and Julian Reese’s athleticism and versatility can’t be overstated.

Colorado State will need to get hot from the perimeter to hang around in this one, and the Rams can ill afford a game where they turn it over double-digit times.

Ultimately, I just believe Maryland is the better basketball team, and it’s playing its best ball of the season at the perfect time.

6.5 points are a lot to be laying against a team that’s won 11 games in a row, but Maryland has been no stranger to double-digit victories this season.

Look for the Terps to take control of this one right out of the gates and keep their foot on the gas pedal all the way to the finish line.

Give me Maryland to win and cover this one in Seattle. Fear the Turtle!
