Yankees Starting Lineup

  1. Ben Rice DH
  2. Aaron Judge RF
  3. Cody Bellinger CF
  4. Paul Goldschmidt 1B
  5. Jazz Chisholm Jr. 2B
  6. Anthony Volpe SS
  7. Jasson Domínguez LF
  8. J.C. Escarra C
  9. Oswaldo Cabrera 3B
  • Starting Pitcher: Max Fried

The Yankees didn’t have much success hitting in the first two games versus Detroit. That now marks a three-game losing skid in which the Yankees scored six runs — three of them came in the ninth inning on Sunday.

Max Fried will take the ball for the Yankees, and this game is why they paid him a ton of money.

He needs to be the stopper. He pitched pretty well in his first two outings, posting a 2.61 ERA, but his expected stats aren’t as rosy.

Fried has a 4.42 xERA and 4.16 xFIP, which indicates some luck. He hasn’t needed to fully lock in, though. The Yankees blew out the Pirates and Brewers in his first two outings, so we’ll see what happens when Fried faces high-stress innings.

Oddly, Fried has a 48% ground-ball rate, which is 10% lower than last year and the worst of his career by far. That’s his DNA, so I expect his ground-ball fortune to change soon.

Even with the brutal three-game stretch, the Yankees still boast the best offense in MLB with a 154 wRC+. A lot of the Yankees’ success comes from hitting homers, and that’s increasingly difficult in a park with unfavorable dimensions — like Detroit’s park and the weather sitting in the 30s and 40s.

It’s freezing out there. The ball isn’t flying like it would be in the summer and that’s quite apparent.

Tigers Starting Lineup

  1. Justyn-Henry Malloy DH
  2. Andy Ibáñez 3B
  3. Riley Greene LF
  4. Spencer Torkelson 1B
  5. Dillon Dingler C
  6. Colt Keith 2B
  7. Javier Báez SS
  8. Ryan Kreidler CF
  9. Zach McKinstry RF
  • Starting Pitcher: Jack Flaherty

The Tigers had a wire-to-wire win on Tuesday as they hammered Carlos Carrasco for four homers. That’s a bright spot, as Detroit entered the game with just 12 home runs.

It’ll be more difficult for the Tigers to hit a bunch of homers against Fried, who has a 0.87 HR/9, which is his highest total since 2019. Detroit will need to manufacture hits against a pitcher who wants to keep the ball on the ground.

If you want an idea of the Tigers’ lineup on Wednesday, take a look at the first game of this series, when they faced Carlos Rodon.

Kerry Carpenter doesn’t play against left-handers and Andy Ibanez starts over Trey Sweeney, which shifts Javier Baez to shortstop. Ibanez homered against Rodon in the series opener. As one of the top hitters in the lineup, Ibanez has to provide some value as a platoon bat.

Left-handers have done a good job of limiting a strong Tigers offense so far. Southpaws hold the Tigers to an 87 wRC+, with just three homers and a 24% strikeout rate. Without Carpenter in the lineup, that minimizes some of the power, so that’s a trend worth watching.

Taking the ball for Detroit is Jack Flaherty, who went 5 2/3 innings in each of his first two outings while surrendering just six hits.

Flaherty has carried over his resurgent 2024 season into 2025 thus far, posting a 2.38 ERA and 3.42 FIP. His K/9 is down to 9.53 from 10.78 last year, with a BB/9 at 3.18 compared to 2.11 last year.

It’s just a small sample, but Flaherty needs to hone in on his command and limit the walks.

Yankees vs Tigers Game Total Prediction

The total is very low at just seven runs and it makes a lot of sense why.

The weather is sure to be ugly again, as it was in the first two games of the series. Plus, with the weather not doing any favors sending the ball over the fence, coupled with two pitchers who are terrific at limiting homers should lead to a very low-scoring game.

Back the stud pitchers here. The first two games just featured a pair of high-scoring innings with zeroes scattered in-between. I expect mostly zeroes in this one.

Pick: Under 7 -108 (play to -125)
