Left-hander Carlos Rodón takes the mound for the Yankees, and he should serve as a strong candidate to back. Rodón has undergone a resurgence over the past two years, beginning with his 16-9 season in 2024.
He finished that campaign with a 3.96 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, building on that success in 2025.
Through eight starts, Rodón is 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. His underlying metrics are even stronger, as he boasts a 2.83 expected ERA (xERA) and a .194 expected batting average (xBA).
Rodón also ranks in the top third of the league in strikeout rate, barrel rate, and hard-hit rate.
Following the left-hander is one of the league’s best bullpens. Entering this matchup, the Yankees’ relief staff ranks seventh in ERA, third in fielding independent pitching (FIP), and sixth in wins above replacement (WAR).

Like Rodón, Sears’ analytics are strong. He ranks in the top third of the league in xERA, xBA, and walk rate.
That said, this pitching staff may not get the strongest run support, especially against Rodón. The Athletics rank in the league’s bottom half in runs scored per game.

The only reason this total is as high as 10 is that the Yankees boast one of the best lineups in baseball. However, that does not offset the other variables.
Both Rodón and Sears have been excellent, and both bullpens have demonstrated reliability. Furthermore, this current Athletics roster owns a .333 slugging percentage and a .277 weighted on-base average (wOBA) through 52 combined plate appearances against Rodón.
