There are some people around the Rangers — and in our industry — who are looking to see if Leiter takes a leap this season. And while this is likely going to be a strong strikeout matchup, I think there is some value here with the under sitting at +120.

On Opening Day, Red Sox hitters struck out 13 times, with Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi racking up nine strikeouts.

However, Leiter doesn’t have that level of strikeout stuff — he struck out just 18% of hitters last year.

I also think there is a reasonable chance that the power of this Red Sox lineup gets to Leiter and knocks him out early.

Another under at plus-money here as I’m going to fade Tylor Megill in this matchup against the Astros.

Unlike Leiter, Megill did flash good strikeout stuff last season as he had a 26.5% K%.

However, this is a tough spot for him — the projected Astros lineup has a K% of just 19.5%. This projected lineup features six hitters with a K% below 19% so Megill could have a tough time missing bats.

Hunter Brown’s had an up-and-down start to his career, but he finally settled down and had a good season in 2024.

Last year, he posted a 25% K% with a 9.4 K/9.

There is certainly some danger in this Mets lineup, but there are also some strikeouts to be had here as six of the nine projected starters have a 22% K% or higher against right-handed pitchers.

Lopez broke out for the Braves in his return to a starter role last season, but faltered down the stretch.

He battled shoulder inflammation to close the season and there were some concerning signs in Spring Training as he was showing diminished velocity on all of his pitches. He averaged 93.3 mph on his fastball in his final spring start, down from 95.5 mph in 2024.

Lopez threw 135 2/3 innings in 2024 after spending the prior three seasons before that primarily as a reliever. From 2020-23, Lopez maxed out at 65 1/3 innings in a season.

The late-season shoulder issue, followed by diminished Spring Training velocity, is the exact opposite of what you’d want to see with Lopez given his career arc. He finished the spring with a 5:4 K:BB across 13 innings. He maxed out at 72 pitches.

San Diego was the most difficult strikeout matchup in the league for right-handed pitchers in 2024. Its 17.8% K% vs. right-handed pitching was 1.4% lower than the next-closest team (Houston).

Tonight’s projected lineup had a 17.1% K% against righties last season. The Padres should once again be among the most contact-heavy offenses this year.

Jack Flaherty returned to the Tigers over the offseason in free agency after they traded him to the Dodgers midseason last year.

Flaherty was excellent last year for both the Tigers and Dodgers as he had a 30% K% and a 31.3 CSW%.

This is obviously a scary matchup against Los Angeles, but there are some strikeout spots here as only two of its nine projected hitters have a K% below 21% against RHPs.
