[subheader sizedown=”false” text=”Nick Galaida’s Astros vs Brewers Best Bet: Value on Valdez”][/subheader]

[gameheader haspick=”true” picktext=”Framber Valdez Over 17.5 Outs (-125)” league=”mlb” awaylogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/hou.png” awayname=”Houston Astros” awayslug=”houston-astros” homelogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/mil.png” homename=”Milwaukee Brewers” homeslug=”milwaukee-brewers” date=”Wednesday, May 7″ time=”1:10 p.m. ET” network=”MLB Network” bookname=”FanDuel” bookprimarylogo=”https://assets.actionnetwork.com/122955_FanDuelSportsBook@1x.jpg” bookreviewslug=”fanduel”][/gameheader]

By Nick Galaida

Framber Valdez was forced from his last start after only five innings as he allowed four earned runs and nine baserunners in an ineffective showing against the White Sox. Still, he averaged a reasonably efficient 3.8 pitches per batter faced in that game. Over the past month (a span of 29 innings), Valdez has been one of the more efficient pitchers in baseball, averaging 3.7 pitches per batter faced.

Today, he draws a favorable matchup against the Brewers — an offense that has a 70 wRC+ against southpaws (ranking 21st) during the past two weeks. The Brewers have one of the more patient lineups in baseball, but Valdez does a good job of working ahead in the count, which should allow him to remain efficient. This is good value for a talented pitcher coming off of an underwhelming outing.

Pick: Framber Valdez Over 17.5 Outs (-125)

[subheader sizedown=”false” text=”Brit Devine’s Astros vs Brewers Best Bet: Wrong Team Favored?”][/subheader]

[gameheader haspick=”true” picktext=”Brewers (+110)” league=”mlb” awaylogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/hou.png” awayname=”Houston Astros” awayslug=”houston-astros” homelogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/mil.png” homename=”Milwaukee Brewers” homeslug=”milwaukee-brewers” date=”Wednesday, May 7″ time=”1:10 p.m. ET” network=”MLB Network” bookname=”BetMGM” bookprimarylogo=”https://assets.actionnetwork.com/779359_BetMGM800x200@1x.png” bookreviewslug=”betmgm”][/gameheader]

I think the books have the wrong team favored.

Astros’ starter Framber Valdez has been good this season, but not up to his usual level and has seen regression, compared to last season, in most areas that matter for a pitcher. He’s a step above Brewers’ starter Quinn Priester in most matchups, but with Yordan Alvarez out of the lineup and the Astros forced to run out a nearly full lineup of righties, Priester starts to look much better, as his struggles have typically come against lefties, which the Astros simply don’t have right now.

The Brewers have the better offense by a decent margin, which should more than make up for the name value of Valdez.

I would have this game set to at least a pick’em, but with a plus-money line being hung on the Brewers, I’m going to back them for two units. Houston’s lineup, in its current form, looks rather weak.

Pick: Brewers (+110)

[subheader sizedown=”false” text=”Dead President Picks’ Mariners vs Athletics Best Bet: Bet the Road Favorite”][/subheader]

[gameheader haspick=”true” picktext=”Mariners -1 (-128)” league=”mlb” awaylogo=”https://images.actionnetwork.com/blog/2023/08/2023-mlb-logo-seattle-mariners.png” awayname=”Seattle Mariners” awayslug=”seattle-mariners” homelogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/oakd.png” homename=”Oakland Athletics” homeslug=”oakland-athletics” date=”Wednesday, May 7″ time=”3:35 p.m. ET” network=”MLB.TV” bookname=”DraftKings ” bookprimarylogo=”https://assets.actionnetwork.com/477013_DraftKings@1x.png” bookreviewslug=”draftkings”][/gameheader]

By Dead President Picks

The Seattle Mariners (21-14) and Athletics (20-17) will clash at Sutter Health Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mariners, led by catcher Cal Raleigh and his 12 homers, will hand the ball to right-hander Bryan Woo (4-1, 2.58 ERA) today. Meanwhile, the Athletics have been one of the best surprises in baseball early this season and will give 25-year-old Gunnar Hoglund (1-0, 1.50 ERA) the start.

Seattle is a road favorite on Wednesday afternoon and I’m going to back the Mariners. Woo has been outstanding this season and has dominated the Athletics in the past. In fact, the Oakland native has held the A’s to a .163 batting average over 92 at-bats.

Today, Woo should have another dominant outing and set the tone for this contest. Seattle has also been red hot offensively, averaging 5.4 runs over its past five games.

Pick: Mariners -1 (-128)

[subheader sizedown=”false” text=”Jim Turvey’s Padres vs Yankees Best Bet: Fade Fried”][/subheader]

[gameheader haspick=”true” picktext=”Max Fried Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-150)” league=”mlb” awaylogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/sd.png” awayname=”San Diego Padres” awayslug=”san-diego-padres” homelogo=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/nyyd.png” homename=”New York Yankees” homeslug=”new-york-yankees” date=”Wednesday, May 7″ time=”7:05 p.m. ET” network=”MLB Network” bookname=”BetMGM” bookprimarylogo=”https://assets.actionnetwork.com/779359_BetMGM800x200@1x.png” bookreviewslug=”betmgm”][/gameheader]

By Jim Turvey

Cue the Bernie Sanders memes, because I am once again asking you to play the under on a pitcher’s strikeouts prop against the Padres. This has been a favorite play this season, as the Padres’ contact-heavy lineup has made for a good pitcher strikeout under opponent this season. San Diego boasts a 18.5% strikeout rate against left-handed pitchers this season (the third lowest in baseball), which should make whiffs tricky for Fried.

Fried has also seen slight downticks in swinging-strike rate and O-Swing rate and, despite strong overall numbers, has been a little less whiff-friendly in general this season.

Pick: Max Fried Under 5.5 Strikeouts (-150)
