Angels vs Red Sox MLB Betting Preview
[subheader sizedown=”true” center=”false” text=”Boston Red Sox” logo1url=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/bos.png” link1=”https://www.actionnetwork.com/mlb/odds/boston-red-sox” link1follow=“false”][/subheader]
Boston will look at one of its few bright spots, starting pitcher Richard Fitts, to begin a winning streak.
I’m sure Fitts isn’t fully stretched out yet, as he returned to the bigs instead of extending his rehab assignment last week. He tossed three scoreless innings in Milwaukee, and it sounds like fellow rookie Hunter Dobbins will piggyback Fitts.
Fitts isn’t a big strikeout pitcher, punching out 6.75 batters per nine innings pitched. Despite that, he’s managed to keep his ERA at a minuscule 2.70 in 20 innings, but his 4.12 xERA and 3.94 FIP indicate regression.
Dobbins is probably the better pitcher of the two. He has a higher ERA at 4.35, but his 3.67 xERA and 3.24 FIP in 39 1/3 innings indicate a promising trend.
That said, pitching out of the bullpen is different than starting, and Dobbins struggled in his lone relief outing of the year last week.
My main concerns center around Boston’s offense. Losing Alex Bregman to an oblique injury has done more damage to the lineup than just losing an MVP candidate. The Red Sox rank 28th among MLB lineups in wRC+ since Bregman got hurt, just barely ahead of the Rangers.
The lack of a true approach seems to be the real problem. They rank in the bottom ten in walk and strikeout rates since Bregman went down, and he’s elite in both categories.
Plus, Rafael Devers hasn’t done much damage because teams can pitch around him and face Wilyer Abreu, who’s hitting .157 in his last 15 games.

The Angels’ offense isn’t doing much hitting lately, either.
After leading MLB in numerous hitting categories in the early part of May, the Angels rank 26th among MLB lineups in wRC+ since May 24 behind a brutal 28.5% strikeout rate.
That said, Mike Trout is back. He has played a couple of games since returning from injury, and his presence makes a significant difference.
I still believe in the Angels’ lineup turning things around. Taylor Ward, Zach Neto, and Logan O’Hoppe each have a wRC+ above 100, but each has struggled in their past seven games. That’s a tough time to slump simultaneously, but it won’t last forever. Those are three legitimately high-level bats that’ll get on track soon.
Tyler Anderson is taking the mound for the Angels. He has the right formula to tantalize Boston’s struggling lineup into taking weak swings.
The veteran southpaw is a soft-contact machine, ranking in the 83rd percentile among qualified pitchers in average exit velocity allowed and the 86th in hard-hit rate allowed.
The large majority of Anderson’s weak contact comes via fly balls. You’d think Anderson could fall victim to Fenway Park with his fly-ball dependency. However, Fenway hasn’t been a big home run park this season (19th among MLB parks in Home Run factor, 89).
Metrics don’t favor Anderson, as his FIP and xERA hover around 5.20. But he’s better than that, as his low strikeout rate bogs down his advanced metrics.
Angels vs Red Sox Pick, Best Bets
I like the Angels at plus money.
The Red Sox took a pair of games in Atlanta, but we’re not far removed from them having a lengthy losing streak.
Plus, the Angels aren’t the Angels of old. They appeared overmatched by the Guardians. However, the Angels also swept the Dodgers less than a month ago.
With Trout returning, I’m buying stock in the Angels finding their footing and getting their record back around .500.
