Cubs vs Yankees Preview, Prediction

[subheader sizedown=”true” center=”false” text=”Yankees Betting Preview: Warren’s the Word” logo1url=”https://static.sprtactn.co/teamlogos/mlb/100/nyyd.png” link1=”https://www.actionnetwork.com/mlb/odds/new-york-yankees” link1follow=“false”][/subheader]

Will Warren has been one of the bright spots for the Yankees in the first half. He went from being unlikely to make the roster if Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole were healthy, to someone the Yankees desperately need.

The thing about Warren is, when he’s pitching well, he looks dominant. When he’s struggling, he can post performances like when he allowed 15 runs against the Dodgers and Blue Jays. Besides those two outings, Warren surrendered 3+ earned runs in just three of his 19 outings, and it was four runs each time.

Warren is quite unlucky, which is why I wouldn’t buy into his 4.70 ERA. I’d rather focus on his strong 3.56 xERA and 3.21 FIP with an elite 11.1 K/9. Plus, Warren avoids the long ball, posting a 0.80 HR/9. I have a lot of optimism about Warren improving.

The Yankees scored just two runs in Saturday’s loss. That’s been a rare sight for the Yankees this month. Through 10 games in July, New York leads MLB with a 153 wRC+ with 21 home runs and a .242 ISO.

New York has an exceptional offense featuring top-end talent and lineup depth. The Yankees have nine players with a wRC+ better than 120 in July.

Aaron Judge has a 221 wRC+, while Austin Wells leads the team with a 235 wRC+ and Cody Bellinger sits with a 216. Bellinger has made a major difference for the Yankees, as he offers protection behind Judge.

The Cubs will end the first half with their ace in Shota Imanaga, who barely factored into their 56 wins to date. I’m pretty worried about Imanaga in the second half.

On the surface, Imanaga posting a 2.80 ERA through 11 starts is a strong start in his second MLB season. Nothing wrong with that, right? Well, Imanaga is the total opposite of Warren in terms of luck, as Chicago’s ace has a 4.20 xERA and 4.60 FIP.

Two stats in particular concern me about Imanaga.

He was a premier strikeout artist last year, ranking in the 72nd percentile in strikeout rate and 67th in whiff rate. This year, Imanaga regressed to 43% in whiff and 17th in strikeout. He’s also a heavy fly-ball pitcher who allows nearly a homer and a half per nine, which is a pretty big disaster waiting to happen with the Yankee Stadium short porch.

The Cubs are unquestionably one of the top teams in the National League, largely thanks to their elite offense. Nothing has changed for Chicago’s offense in July, boasting an impressive 117 wRC+.

The Cubs haven’t hit for the same power they did in other months, ranking 11th in homers and ninth in ISO. Many teams would be jubilant if their squad ranked top 11 in both categories, but the Cubs can do better.

Additionally, the Cubs could use much more from Kyle Tucker. He’s been incredible all year, but has a 65 wRC+ in July.

The same goes for Nico Hoerner, who is hitting .228 with an 80 wRC+ this month. They’ll need that pair to thrive to get to Warren.

Cubs vs Yankees Prediction, Betting Analysis

I’m rolling with the numbers here.

Warren is an exceptional young arm who will have an ERA in the low 4s in no time. That begins with a strong outing to finish the second half.

On the flip side, I expect Imanaga’s fly-ball rate and lack of strikeouts to be a real problem against the Yankees’ elite power.
