Notre Dame has reportedly suspended its men’s swimming program for one year after an investigation found the team wagered with each other on their performances.

Effectively, members of the team created an internal sportsbook that set lines on team members’ swim times and results.
It’s unclear from the Sports Illustrated report whether the Notre Dame team wagered on other teams’ performances.
The women’s swimming and diving teams were not affected by the announcement.
Sports Illustrated reported that the “majority” of the men’s team members placed wagers.
No punishments for individual players or coaches have been doled out, but could result in as severe as a permanent suspension.
The Notre Dame news follows a long line of NCAA gambling violations over the past year.
In 2023, a litany of Iowa and Iowa State athletes were suspended or banned for wagering underaged and/or on school-affiliated contests. (Criminal cases against them were later dropped after state officials reportedly violated their civil rights.)
And the Alabama head baseball coach was effectively banned for life after relaying insider information about a pitching change to an associate, who attempted to place large, six-figure wagers on the opposing side.
