Arizona’s lineup looks a lot different after the Trade Deadline. The Diamondbacks shipped out Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor, which thinned out the middle of the order. They also dealt lefty masher Randal Grichuk. The Diamondbacks received Tyler Locklear in the Suarez trade and while Locklear is an intriguing prospect, it’s telling that he’ll likely slot right into the cleanup spot in his Arizona debut. Outside of Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte up top, this isn’t an imposing group.

Jacob Lopez battled control issues in his most recent outing, which forced him out of the game in the fifth inning, despite holding Houston scoreless through 4 1/3 frames. Lopez has excellent contact metrics and well-above-average strikeout numbers. Home runs and walks can give him issues, but Arizona’s depleted lineup shouldn’t be able to exploit those weaknesses.

Anthony Desclafani will oppose Lopez. He’s been solid in long relief this season after missing 2024 with an arm injury, but will now be pressed into the rotation with Merrill Kelly having been traded to Texas. Desclafani was knocked around in his lone start (four earned runs over four innings vs. KC) this year and will have to tangle with an Athletics offense that ranked in the top five in OPS, wOBA and wRC+ vs. right-handed pitching in July.
