It is never fun fading a really good pitcher, but this is just a tough strikeout matchup for Carlos Rodon, who has already been struggling with strikeout production recently — he has had five or fewer strikeouts in three of his past four starts. No team has struck out less over the past 30 days against left-handed pitching than the Blue Jays, and when you look at their projected lineup, eight of the hitters have a strikeout rate of 19% or lower against left-handed pitching this season.

This is a high-octane pitching matchup facing a pair of scuffling offenses. Chase Burns was as advertised in his MLB debut, striking out eight over five innigs against a dangerous Yankees lineup. Meanwhile, Garrett Crochet has put together a Cy Young season, leading the league in strikeouts and ranking third in ERA. He’s allowed two earned runs or fewer in 15 of 17 starts.

Cincinnati ranks 24th or worse in OPS, wOBA and wRC+ vs. left-handed pitching since the start of May. Boston is 25th or worse in those metrics against right-handed pitching in June. It’s a nice recipe for a pitchers’ duel.

There is some juice here but likely not enough. This could get into heavy juice territory, maybe even a 5.5 line, by the time we get to first pitch.

Jacob Lopez has been on a tear lately, striking out five or more hitters in five straight appearances, and he has shown real upside as well, with nine or more strikeouts in three of those five games. Lopez also gets a good matchup in terms of strikeouts as the Rays have struck out at the fourth-highest rate in the league against left-handed pitching over the past 30 days.
