Giants vs Rockies Preview, Prediction

The Giants have seen plenty of Kyle Freeland in the past, totaling 110 career plate appearances against him. It’s been a productive 110 at-bats, as they are batting .300 as a team.

It was encouraging to see the Giants wake up in the ninth yesterday, which could provide them some offensive momentum against Freeland. It’s a plus matchup for their offense, despite struggling against left-handed pitching thus far in 2025 (.214 BA).

But the story for the Giants tonight lies with left-hander Robbie Ray, who has been one of the best pitchers in the National League thus far. Some of Ray’s metrics are very impressive, especially his xBA.

Opposing hitters have a .201 xBA against Ray, which puts him amongst the elite in baseball. He also sports a sparkling 2.75 xERA and a 30% strikeout rate.

He has allowed more hard contact than what you would typically want, but his ability to miss bats has more than made up for it. The Rockies are not a strong offensive team and struggle to hit left-handed pitchers well.

It’s an excellent matchup for Ray, and I see no reason why his early-season success won’t continue tonight.

It can’t possibly get worse for the 2025 Colorado Rockies, and last night’s loss was a perfect depiction of how their season has gone as they are on pace to finish with the single-season worst record in Major League Baseball history.

Veteran Kyle Freeland gets the ball for the Rockies tonight, and some of his metrics caught me by surprise. Freeland has a 32% chase rate in 2025, which is excellent. His walks have also decreased significantly, with only a 4% walk rate.

However, Freeland is still prone to getting lit up consistently due to his home ballpark and not striking out enough batters. It’s bizarre that his chase rate is at an elite level, but his strikeout numbers are still poor.

I would not be stunned to see Freeland turn in a decent start, especially given the Giants’ struggles against left-handers, but I am not banking on that. The bigger issue is that the Rockies are taking on Ray, who has been on a roll.

The Rockies are second to last in runs scored per game and they to hit left-handed pitching. Their team batting average gets a significant boost at home, but will not provide enough of a boost toight.

I can’t bet on the Rockies, but I am not running to the window to lay heavy juice with the Giants.

Giants vs Rockies Prediction, Betting Analysis

This is a good opportunity to fade the Rockies early. It’s a bit scary that this game is being played at Coors Field, but I am highly impressed with Ray’s numbers.

Ray should be able to stifle the Rockies’ bats through the early portion of the game, and this pick will eliminate any potential late-game bullpen variance.

Ray is prone to being struck occasionally, but that doesn’t apply here, given the Rockies’ poor offensive performance. Ray’s opponent’s xBA of .201 and 6.7% barrel rate, which complements his strikeout stuff, gives me more than enough justification for this to be my best bet.

Pick: Rockies F5 Team Total Under 1.5
