Jake Irvin has a rather pedestrian 19.4% strikeout rate over his career — and that number is even lower this season.
His swinging strike rate is down, his velocity is down and his stuff is down. Now, he draws a Dodgers’ lineup that is among the best in baseball and that, despite its power bats, has struck out at a rate below league average against right-handed pitchers.

The Washington Nationals host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon after surprisingly winning the first two games of the series.
James Wood, who leads the Nationals with four homers and 10 RBI, will look to provide offensive support for Jake Irvin (0-0, 5.40 ERA).
Meanwhile, the Dodgers have slipped to 9-4 after their 8-0 start and will hand the ball to Landon Knack (1-0, 0.00 ERA) as they look to get back on track.
Offensively, Teoscar Hernandez is off to a hot start with four home runs and 13 RBI. I expect him to stay hot and the Dodgers to get back in the win column. Over 57 at-bats, the Dodgers are hitting .357 again Irvin, which gives me confidence in the road favorites in this spot.

Tanner Houck stumbled into a plus matchup against Baltimore last time out, receiving a favorable lineup draw. However, he won’t be as lucky Wednesday.
Toronto was a high-contact lineup last season and has kept it up in 2025, posting a 19% K% against right-handed pitching. Houck fell off considerably in the second half of last season, posting a 16.1% strikeout rate from July on (13 starts). He finished the season with an underwhelming 9.8% swinging-strike rate and is at 9.4% through two starts this season.
This outing should look more like his two-strikeout season debut than the six-strikeout performance last time out.
