St. Thomas vs Omaha College Basketball Betting Preview

Shout out to the Mavericks for starting Summit League play 5-0, especially after losing scoring forward Frankie Fidler to Michigan State.

That said, I have some reservations about the sustainability of their success.

The Mavericks are shooting a scorching 45% from beyond the arc, while their opponents have shot only 31% from 3. Those splits aren’t something you can reasonably expect to continue indefinitely.

I’m also curious about their shot selection. They rely heavily on mid-range shots, which isn’t always the most efficient strategy, ranking near the bottom of the nation in rim-and-3 rate (80%, 241st nationally, per ShotQuality).

On the contrary, the Tommies are a highly-efficient Princeton-motion offense. They rank second nationally in rim-and-3 rate (95%, per ShotQuality) and lead the Summit in offensive efficiency (129, per KenPom).

That’s a problem for Omaha, which ranks sub-300th nationally in rim-and-3 PPP allowed (1.1, per ShotQuality). That doesn’t bode well against St. Thomas’ uber-disciplined, uber-efficient offense.

Meanwhile, I have questions about the Tommies’ defense, which allows too many rim-and-3 opportunities. However, they’ve been excellent at denying mid-range attempts, which — while typically an inefficient way to defend — should make the Mavericks’ mid-range-reliant attack uncomfortable.

Ultimately, the Mavericks are overvalued based on lucky shooting variance and are due for a loss.

Meanwhile, I think the Tommies are the class of the Summit League, and I think they’ll hand the Mavericks that much-deserved overdue regression loss, even on the road in a battle of undefeated Summit League squads.
