Steelers vs. Ravens Preview

After a roaring 8-2 start to their season, the Steelers struggled down the stretch of the regular season. Pittsburgh dropped its last four games heading into this Wild Card game. The Steelers’ one silver lining may be that they’ve historically had the secret sauce in defending MVP candidate Lamar Jackson. Can they do it again on Saturday night?

The Steelers and Ravens split their two regular-season games. Pittsburgh won the first game in November without scoring a touchdown before Baltimore bounced back with a blowout win in December. Notably, the aforementioned Jackson has not logged a rushing touchdown against the Steelers in his career.

Despite the fact that these AFC North rivals are 1-1 against each other this season, the Ravens are clearly the better team.

They beat the Steelers by 17 in the second meeting, following a two-point loss earlier in the season in Pittsburgh.

Better is one thing, but are the Ravens 10 points better? That’s the question being asked now that this line has hit double digits at BetMGM.

I say no, for a few reasons.

The biggest is that it’s hard to cover a double-digit spread in a low-scoring game, and books have the total here at just 43.5. It’s going to be cold and windy in Baltimore, especially with this being a night game.

The Ravens ruled out their top wide receiver Zay Flowers ahead of this game, limiting the explosive potential of their offense. Pittsburgh’s defense should be able to limit big plays on the ground enough to at least keep this one close.

On the other side, Pittsburgh has its top wide receiver George Pickens back after he missed the last game against Baltimore. That’s a huge difference against an exploitable Ravens pass defense.

I don’t expect the Steelers to win, but keeping the score to single digits shouldn’t be a huge ask.

Pick: Steelers +10 (-115)

The Steelers are not exactly thriving entering the playoffs. They have lost four straight games and are averaging 14.25 points per game in that stretch. One of those losses was in this exact matchup in Week 16, a 34-17 loss to the Ravens.

The Ravens, meanwhile, are absolutely thriving. They have won four straight and the closest game was that 17-point win over the Steelers. They have scored 31 or more points in all of those games, as well.

I’d lean toward betting on the Ravens as a side here, which is why I’m on the over. I’m not saying Baltimore is guaranteed to score 30 points, but the offense is humming and I don’t think Pittsburgh can stop it. The Steelers pass rush is strong, but Lamar Jackson’s mobility limits that.

Sean Koerner projects this total at 44.5, and Chris Raybon has it at 44, so I’ll happily play this total at 43.5. I expect Baltimore to keep thriving offensively, and the Steelers are due for some offensive regression (probably not too much), even against a Ravens defense that has also gotten much better down the stretch.

Pick: Over 43.5

Pickens has not been great in the few games he’s played since returning from injury, but he’s still been getting good target volume — 13 total in his last two regular-season games — and should continue to do so in this game.

The Ravens have forced opponents to throw at the highest rate in the league this season, and with the Steelers as 9.5-point underdogs, they will likely be forced to throw a lot.

Pickens has been the go-to target for Russell Wilson this season. Pickens leads the team in red-zone targets and is also a big deep threat.

All signs point toward Pickens getting the volume here — the odds just don’t reflect it.

Pick: George Pickens Anytime Touchdown (+210)
