Today’s Key Moves

Vegas Golden Knights acquire Tomas Hertl

Analysis:ย With Noah Hanifin and Tomas Hertl now in the fold, the Golden Knights appear primed for another Stanley Cup run. Thanks to LTIR, Vegas’ roster is as loaded as ever. Hertl is a 60-point player who has 42 points in 62 career playoff games. He’ll bring even more offensive pop to an already stacked forward group. On paper, the Golden Knights look flawless. As long as Hertl can quickly get up to speed once he recovers from his knee injury, Vegas should enter the playoffs as one of the Cup favorites.

New York Rangers acquire Jack Roslovic

Analysis:ย After missing out on Jake Guentzel, the Rangers made a surprising pivot to Roslovic. He’ll likely slot into New York’s top six alongside Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider. The 27-year-old former first-round pick has bounced around a bit, but he has two 40-plus-point seasons to his name. The Rangers are banking on Roslovic playing to his upside with the help of two of their premier players. But if they have Stanley Cup aspirations, they’ll also need Roslovic to help unlock Mika Zibanejad.

Tampa Bay Lightning acquire Matt Dumba

Analysis:ย The Lightning are currently a bubble team, but it’s no surprise to see them add a defenseman after missing out on Noah Hanifin. Dumba is no longer the offensive contributor he was early in his career, but he should help fill the void left behind by Mikhail Sergachev. Ultimately, the addition of Dumba may not even be enough to get Tampa Bay into the playoffs.

Philadelphia Flyers acquire Erik Johnson

Analysis:ย With Sean Walker on his way to Colorado, the Flyers needed to add some defensive depth. Johnson is a veteran with a Stanley Cup to his name, but at 35 years old, he is well past his prime and is nothing more than a third-pair, sheltered defensive defenseman. This move strikes me as general manager Daniel Briere trying to send a message to his team that the front office is still committed to making the playoffs this season. His overachieving Flyers earned this reward.

New Jersey Devils acquire Jake Allen

Analysis:ย The Devils finally acquired a goalie, but it’s likely too little too late. With New Jersey moving Tyler Toffoli this morning, the addition of Allen doesn’t make a ton of sense. The Devils’ playoff hopes are slim at this point, and it’s not as if Allen is an elite netminder. The 33-year-old is 6-12-3 this season with a 3.65 GAA and a .892 SV%. Allen is under contract for next season, and his cap hit in New Jersey will be just under $2 million.

Nashville Predators acquire Jason Zucker

Analysis:ย After winning eight consecutive games, the Predators aren’t throwing the towel in on the 2023-2024 season. Zucker posted 25 points in 51 games for the Arizona Coyotes this season, but Nashville’s supporting cast may spark a scoring uptick. Zucker is past his prime, but the 32-year-old has been a productive middle-six winger throughout his career. He put up 48 points in 78 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season.

Boston Bruins acquire Patrick Maroon

Analysis:ย Maroon is purely a bottom-six depth forward at this point, but he brings an impressive Stanley Cup pedigree to Boston. The 35-year-old won three consecutive Stanley Cups from 2019-2021. Maroon had just 16 points in 49 games for the Minnesota Wild this season; however, he’ll be a welcome addition to the Bruins’ locker room.

Carolina Hurricanes acquire Evgeny Kuznetsov

Analysis: Kuznetsov is the quintessential high-risk, high-reward addition. After several 70-plus-point seasons for the Washington Capitals, things have fallen off the rails for the enigmatic center over the last two years. Ultimately, the 31-year-old was waived by the Capitals earlier this week. The Hurricanes are hoping he can regain his previous form, but the potential salary cap ramifications are significant. It’s worth noting, Kuznetsov is a proven playoff performer — he posted 32 points in 24 games when the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Winnipeg Jets acquire Tyler Toffoli

Analysis:ย Toffoli is an excellent addition to the Jets’ top six. Winnipeg needed to add another scoring threat, and the shoot-first power forward provides exactly that. The 31-year-old — who won two Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles Kings — scored 26 goals in 61 games for the New Jersey Devils this season. In 88 career playoff games, Toffoli has posted 44 points.

Carolina Hurricanes acquire Jake Guentzel

Analysis: Guentzel was seen as the crown jewel of this year’s trade market and rightfully so. He has a Stanley Cup to his name, and he’s a proven playoff performer with 58 points in 58 career postseason contests. The Hurricanes once lacked premiere talent up front, but with Guentzel in the fold, there is no shortage of offensive firepower in Carolina. If the Hurricanes’ goaltending continues to stabilize, they’ll join the Florida Panthers as the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference.
