Find a Tulane vs East Carolina pick below for college football betting.

We’ve got two teams coming into this game with the exact opposite record. Tulane is sporting a 7-1 record, while ECU has a paltry 1-7 record.

Against the spread, however, these two teams are much more even with even 3-5 records. In terms of the over/under, both of these teams are not great. Tulane has gone 2-6 to the over, while ECU is just 3-5.

You may remember the Pirates from our Action Analytics betting preview a few weeks ago, and guess what: they’re still not a great college football team. At this point, they are playing for pride.

Tulane, meanwhile is playing for back-to-back AAC titles and another high-profile bowl appearance.

Let’s dive into these college football odds and make a pick for Tulane vs. East Carolina below.

Tulane comes into this season at 7-1, but is it an elite Group of Five team?

Its offense and defense are undeniably solid — not elite but good.

On offense, the Green Wave rank 40th in Offensive Success Rate, 14th in Havoc Allowed and 67th in Points per Opportunity. However, they achieve this by playing at a slow pace (29.5 seconds per play, 118th) and running the ball about 59% of the time, the 14th-highest rate in the county.

They don’t pass often, but they generally have success when they do, ranking 12th in Passing Success Rate. Ironically, Tulane ranks 86th in Rushing Success despite running it much more often.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Wave are essentially a tale of two teams: the run defense and the pass defense.

When defending the run, Tulane ranks 34th in Success Rate Allowed and 91st in explosiveness allowed. When defending the pass, the Green Wave come in at 123rd in Success Rate Allowed and 10th in explosiveness allowed.

The good news for them? ECU’s offense barely qualifies as such, so they should be OK regardless.

And now for the ECU Pirates. I really try not to criticize and say things like, “That’s not a good football team” when these are 18-22-year-olds who are more athletic and talented than I could ever dream of being.

But at the same time, it’s tough to look at this ECU offense and come away with any positives — like anything remotely good.

The Pirates rank 131st in Success Rate, 101st in explosiveness, 132nd in Points per Opportunity and 100th in Havoc Allowed. That’s just not ideal.

It doesn’t get better when you split it out in run vs. pass either. Somehow, it gets worse. When running the ball, the Pirates rank 123rd in Success Rate and 73rd in explosiveness, while they rank 131st in Success Rate and 116th in explosiveness through the air.

The bright side is that ECU is actually decent on defense! In fact, I would say it’s more than decent — maybe even good. The Pirates rank 10th in Success Rate Allowed, 13th in Points per Opportunity Allowed and 12th in total Havoc.

This is a defense that could legitimately give the Green Wave some trouble, especially when they cross ECU’s 40.

The downside is they rank 133rd in explosiveness allowed, so Tulane may have a couple of long plays this weekend.

I think Tulane may have to cash this over by itself, but I think ECU’s defense is far too good for that.

Give me another despicable under in a Pirates game.
