Brentford’s Ivan Toney Suspended for Betting Breaches

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been suspended eight months by the English Football Association.

The 27-year-old was charged with 262 total betting breaches spanning from 2017-21 across clubs Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and his current squad, Brentford.

The English Football Association, which also slapped Toney with a fine and future warning, said in a statement:

“Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months, which runs up to and including 16 January 2024, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between Feb. 25 2017 and Jan. 23 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232.”

Toney ranks third in the Premier League with 20 goals this season. He joined the team in 2020.

He posted this on Twitter Wednesday:

“Today I have received notification of my 8-month ban from football following a hearing before an FA Regulatory Commission that took place yesterday. I am naturally disappointed that I will be unable to play for the next 8 months.”

This is the second gambling story sweeping the nation in soccer in recent weeks. Colorado Rapids player Max Alves was also suspended for alleged match-fixing in a sports betting operation.
