Mel Tucker and his Michigan State Spartans have a massive test this week as they travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies.
The Spartans are the 11th-ranked team in the country and the Huskies are unranked, but Washington is a 3-point favorite in the game.
Tucker is very comfortable in this spot. Last season, the Spartans played four games as a single-digit underdog and the results were impressive.
They won all four of those games straight-up. The last time Michigan State was a 3-point dog, they beat Northwestern 38-21 in the first game of the 2021 season.
They went on to beat Miami 38-17 as a 7-point dog, then Michigan as a 4-point underdog and beat Penn State as a 4.5-point dog.
The 2020 season wasn’t as kind to Tucker in his first season in the green and white. They went 0-2 ATS as a single-digit dog.
But rewind to his first and only season at Colorado, the Buffs went 3-1 as a single-digit dog and won all three of those games straight-up.
In total, Tucker has gone 7-3 ATS as a single-digit underdog in his coaching career. On top of that, his teams are 7-3 straight-up in those games.
Bettors are backing the trend as 70% of the spread bets are currently on the Spartans. BetMGM has reported that Michigan State is getting the second-most tickets of the Week 3 slate and the second-highest handle of any of the games.
If you believe in Tucker as a single-digit underdog, there’s good reason to forget the points. In all seven games in which Tucker has covered the spread as a single-digit dog, Tucker’s teams have won the game straight-up.
Bettors are already backing that theory as 81% of the moneyline bets are on Michigan State.
Can the Spartan Dogs live up to their nickname?
