New York sports bettors will finally get to take a long-awaited hiatus from catching the path train over to Hoboken, New Jersey to place their bets come the new year.
Although an official launch date has yet to be announced, it’s widely expected that online NY sports betting will be legalized and live ahead of the 2022 Super Bowl in February.
Sportsbooks put in bids to potentially operate in New York a few months ago, and since then, nine have been approved to move ahead with launching when the state is ready:
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- Caesars
- BetMGM
- PointsBet
- WynnBET
- Rush Street (BetRivers and SugarHouse)
- Bally Bet
- Resorts World
Now that we know which books will be available, the next most important question needs to be answered: What sports will New Yorkers be able to bet on?
There will, of course, be NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL games and events up and ready to bet on as the Big 4 sports leagues continue to dominate the betting landscape across the country.
While the New York Giants and New York Jets will miss the 2021-22 NFL playoffs, you’ll soon be able to bet on the upcoming NFL Draft, where both teams could potentially hold two top 10 picks each. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills remain in contention to make the playoffs.
The Brooklyn Nets are the favorite to win the NBA championship this season, while the New York Knicks hope to return to the playoffs this spring for a second straight year.
The New York Yankees and revamped New York Mets look ready to contend for a World Series title in 2022 once the MLB lockout – hopefully – ends. Could we potentially see another Subway World Series?
Hockey is well underway and the New York Rangers are in prime position to make a deep run in the NHL playoffs. The New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders have some work to do if they want to make it to the postseason.
Then there’s college sports, including NCAA football and NCAA men’s basketball. Bowl Season is upon us and the College Football Playoff kicks off on New Year’s Eve. Plus, March Madness is a few short months away and always draws in more eyeballs.
The UFC’s rise into the top sporting ranks is not only powered by the sport’s thrilling action, but its emphasis on betting on fights.
Here’s a list of some of the other sports many books offer:
- Aussie Rules
- Boxing
- Cricket
- Darts
- Golf
- Handball
- Lacrosse
- Motorsports/NASCAR
- Rugby League and Union
- Soccer
- Table Tennis
- Tennis
- Volleyball
But here’s the thing, while the majority of sportsbooks offer the same variety of sports, there are a few categories in which some don’t overlap.
Looking at the two sportsbook giants in FanDuel and DraftKings, they both have a large library of sports to choose from. However, FanDuel offers a few smaller-scale sports, like cycling and snooker, that DraftKings doesn’t.
If you’re interested in betting on some of the more niche sports on the market, then it would be wise to study different books and what they have to offer.
